In honor of National Water Safety Month, it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of life jackets and overall water safety on the Chattahoochee River. The City of Roswell is home to many parks situated on the River and there are various activities to participate in. Whether you’re an experienced swimmer or enjoy recreational water activities, taking precautions is key to enjoying a safe and enjoyable time on the River.
Why Wear a Life Jacket?
Even if you’re confident in your swimming abilities or the water seems shallow, wearing a life jacket is non-negotiable. Life jackets are designed to keep you afloat, can be seen from far distances and can be lifesaving in unexpected situations. When kayaking, rafting, paddle boarding and more, it’s required to wear a life jacket. Remember, accidents can happen to anyone, regardless of age or swimming expertise.
Did you know the City of Roswell has a Life Jacket Loaner Station? A life jacket loaner station is where visitors can borrow life jackets during the day and return them after use. The life jacket loaner station is available at Azalea Park, located at 203 Azalea Dr. and is accessible from Don White Park as well.
Life Jacket Safety Tips
- Locate the Cross Guard Stamp: Ensure that any life jacket you use has a Cross Guard Stamp, indicating that it meets safety standards and is suitable for water activities. This stamp is located on the inside of the life jacket.
- Make sure it’s a proper fit: A life jacket should fit snugly, but comfortably. Adjust straps and closures to ensure a secure fit that won’t ride up or slip off when in the water.
- Check for the correct size: Choose a life jacket that matches your weight and size. Read the inside of the life jacket to make sure it is the correct size for your body. Using an ill-fitting life jacket can compromise its effectiveness in keeping you safe.
Additional Safety Tips
- Check the Conditions: Before spending a day on the River, be sure to check the weather to make sure it is safe to spend the day outside in the water. Also, check water safety conditions and the dam schedule on the Chattahoochee River to ensure a smooth sailing.
- Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can occur quickly, especially on hot days. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated while enjoying your water activities.
- Wear Sunscreen: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen regularly, especially while spending extended periods outdoors.
- Inform Someone: If you’re venturing onto the Chattahoochee River or any body of water alone, always inform a friend or family member of your plans and expected return time.
By following these safety tips, you can enjoy a fun and worry-free experience on the water. Remember, National Water Safety Month serves as a reminder to prioritize safety and make responsible choices whenever you’re near water this summer. Stay safe and enjoy your aquatic adventures responsibly!
